“The chief cause of failure is substituting what you want most for what you want now.”
Zig Ziglar – 1926-2012 – Author-Salesman
Ask yourself, is this you? ‘I want to lose weight but not as much as I want that donut right now!’ Does this sum it up? ‘I want to be fit but not as much as I want to watch this movie right now!’
You get the idea. We all have this desire to improve ourselves but to do so we must sometimes forgo immediate pleasures in the short term to acquire the long term benefits. This goes against the grain of just about EVERY advertisement out there right now.
The error is to think you have to abstain or go without. Instead of focusing on what you are “giving up”, ask yourself what you are obtaining. I find that when you are in the process of making substantive changes it is great to have a family, friend, or coworker who is doing it with you so that you have that next layer of accountability.
I walked into a nutritional consultation the other day with a gentleman who needs to lose about 100 lbs. When I walked into the room, his wife was right by his side and I said to her, “Hi! I am Dr. Dan and I am going to say to him the exact same thing you have been saying for the last 5 years- but he will listen to me!” 🙂
Ask any teenager, the definition of an expert is anyone who lives outside their house. Ha! We want to be the smartest one in our house but it’s best to do the changes with your loved ones so we can all be right!
Set your goal, find your partner, and GET IT DONE.
